If you’ve always wanted to learn how to scuba dive, discover new adventures or simply see the wondrous world beneath the waves, the place to learn to dive is Aquanauts Dive Centre Sunderland.
Aquanauts is a local PADI dive centre based in Sunderland and has been certifying PADI divers for over 5 years.
Our instructors have
a wealth of knowledge and over 20 years combined teaching experience, in the UK and abroad, both in the Recreational
and Technical areas of the sport. Also we have our own
in-house ASSET trained technician and can service every make of Regulator as well as a fully stocked shop offering scuba diving equipment from most manufacturers and coming soon an IDEST cylinder testing station.
So whatever your scuba diving needs we are able to help you.
We pride ourselves on our Professional, friendly and helpful service to make you feel comfortable and at ease at all times whilst starting your diving adventure
and just as important having FUN.
We understand (as we have all been there and remember what it feels like)
that there can be some trepidation the first time you put on your scuba kit and descend under the water for the first time, before feeling the exhiliration of experiencing weightlessness
and taking your first breaths underwater.
The PADI Open Water Diver course is the world’s most popular scuba course, and has introduced millions of people to the adventurous diving lifestyle.
If you are not sure if diving is for you but want to try it before you commit to a course,
then why not take the PADI Discover Scuba (try dive) experience?
This involves being introduced to Scuba Diving in the confines of a swimming pool, where the members of our professional and friendly teaching staff help you take the first steps towards scuba diving.
Here you will be introduced to the SCUBA unit,
how to breathe underwater, hand signals
(as we can't talk underwater) and a few basic skills that are needed to dive safely and enhance your enjoyment.
These sessions usually last 3 hours, starting off in the classroom, briefing you
on the equipment, hand signals, and the basic diving skills we will be doing in the pool. Then its off to the pool to put everything into practice and have FUN.
Usual price £20 per person,.

Learning to dive is not like buying a packet of biscuits, and what you see
is not always what you get.
So before you commit to a dive course with a dive centre ask the questions and see how much value for money you are really getting.
Questions to ask Prospective dive centres before you sign up
Are air fills covered in the cost of the course?
Yes regardless of which course you are signing up for your air fills are included in the price you pay at Aquanauts
Is the use of kit included in the price of my course?
The use of the dive equipment is covered in the openwater course, for any continuing education courses you undertake, our daily kit hire rate is £45 per day and there is a preferential rate for current/returning Aquanauts students.
Do you provide transport to and from pool and dive sites, in the cost of the course?
Transport to the confined water sessions is provided to all students free of charge and also for Openwater students, for all other courses and pleasure divers a small contribution towards the fuel costs is asked.
This is a lot cheaper than having to take your own car to dive sites ( as some sites may be a 225 mile round trip, dependant on whether we can dive in the sea on the day) and also helps expand your future circle of dive buddies, which makes for a more relaxing, cheaper and enjoyable day..
We are the only dive centre in the north east which offers you this service.
Other centres expect you to use your own vehicle or car share.
Do I need to buy any equipment before I start the course?
No, you do not have to buy any equipment before you sign up for a course with us, however some students do prefer to buy certain basic items like a mask and snorkel.
If you would like to do this, then just speak to a member of staff who will help you with your requirements. We also have offers on package deals so just ask.
Are the materials covered in the cost of the course?
Yes all materials are priced into the cost of your course and are yours to keep.
What are your maximum class sizes?
With having numerous instructors at Aquanauts, we like to keep the instructor to student
ratio at 1 instructor for every 4 students. Over time and feedback from previous students we have come to find this to be the ideal sized group and allows for quality instruction and one to one time with the students.
How long will it take to complete the course?
The course is based around 5 confined water and classroom sessions, based on 1 confined and 1 classroom session per week and 4 Openwater dives which must be completed over 2 days, so the usual time scale is around 5-7 weeks.
What if i can't make consecutive weeks?
We realise that with peoples commitments nowadays that this may not be suitable for everybody, and we feel passionately that the course should be tailored around you to gain the maximum benefit and enjoyment. We have had experience of tailoring courses to people who work permanent nights, continental shifts, work on oil rigs and even people who work at sea for extended periods. What your job is isn't a problem, just give us a call and we will tailor the course to your needs.
What if i want to do it in a shorter time scale?
Again not a problem, we will set a mutually convenient schedule for you to be able to complete the course in the time you have available, but there would be an extra cost incurred for this service.
Where will I do my Openwater Dives ?
As far as possible, we endeavour to complete the Openwater dives portion of the course in
the sea locally Bowns Bay, St. Marys light house, Roker. If local conditions are not favourable
then we look at sites on the Northumberland coast such as Beadnell, Howick, Lowick or
even up as far as Eyemouth and St. Abbs.
If these locations are undiveable we will use one of several inland sites such as Ellerton Quarry (North Yorkshire) or Capernwray (Lancashire).
Once I am qualified where do I dive?
When you have finished your Openwater diver course, you are not cast adrift. We have an informal dive club, where you will have the opportunity to continue diving with the dive centre, visiting some fantastic dive sites both in the UK and abroad.
Once I am qualified do I have to buy my equipment from you to continue diving with the centre?
No there is no requirement for you to buy your equipment from ourselves to continue diving with us. However if you are looking to purchase your own equipment then have a talk with one of our experienced members of staff and we will do our best to meet your needs and answer any questions you have.
